South Front Tavern: One Year of Flavor, Community, and Momentum

Owner Mark Zecher welcoming guests at South Front Tavern anniversary celebration in Wilmington NC

In the heart of Wilmington’s South Front District, a warm light spills from the expansive windows of South Front Tavern—a place where neighbors gather, flavors shine, and hospitality is more than just a word.

The man behind it all, Mark Zecher, is no stranger to the restaurant world. A Long Island native, Mark spent decades in hospitality, starting with sweat equity and working his way up as an owner-operator. When he and his family moved to Wilmington in 2020, he stepped into a role as General Manager at Oceanic in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

But Mark’s entrepreneurial spirit never stopped calling.

““I’ve always been an owner-operator at heart,” he says. “I knew I wanted my own place, I was just waiting for the right opportunity.””

That opportunity came with the help of Momentum Companies. While exploring Wilmington, Mark stepped into Momentum’s Front Street office, where he connected with President Terry Espy. Terry introduced him to different areas of the city, and when the South Front Tavern space became available, something clicked.

“I loved the bones of the space,” Mark recalls. “The South Front District was being revitalized, and it had a community feel. I didn’t want to rely just on seasonal tourism—I wanted to build a local following. Plus, my employees wouldn’t have to pay for parking, which mattered to me.”

A First Year of Lessons and Wins

Since opening its doors in August 2023, South Front Tavern has built a loyal guest base. But Mark is quick to point out that year one came with lessons.

“The biggest challenge has been marketing,” he admits. “There are still so many people who don’t know we’re here. It takes consistent time, effort, and resources to build awareness.”

Operationally, however, the Tavern has hit its stride. The restaurant receives glowing guest feedback and reviews, and the menu—crafted from Mark’s own recipes from his time as a Chef traveling the country and executed by a like minded Chef, Ken Hanson, has been a standout.

A Milestone Celebration

On Friday, August 1, 2025, South Front Tavern celebrated its first anniversary in style. The evening drew a lively crowd who enjoyed complimentary passed hors d’oeuvres, a champagne toast, and live music. The celebration was a heartfelt thank-you to the community, and the strong turnout showed just how much support the tavern has earned in its first year.

Looking to Year Two

As South Front Tavern moves into its second year, Mark has clear goals: grow sales, explore expanded lunch service, host more private events, and increase community involvement.

“The first year you’re figuring everything out,” he says. “The second year you can focus on dialing things in and giving back.”

Built on Hospitality

At its core, South Front Tavern is about more than food—it’s about connection.

“We keep things casual, but we elevate everything just a bit to set ourselves apart,” Mark says. “The bottom line is hospitality—making guests feel appreciated and welcome. I’ve been blessed with a great staff, many of whom have been here since day one. In this business, that says a lot.”

From an idea sparked in a revitalized district to a thriving local favorite, South Front Tavern’s first year is a testament to Mark’s vision, his team’s dedication, and the supportive role of Momentum Companies in placing the right operator in the right space.

As the Tavern raises a glass to year one, it’s clear they’re just getting started.
